The number of skin biopsies collected in the US increases ~6% per year, building on a 154% gain from 1986-2001. These increasing skin biopsy volumes must be handled by a shrinking workforce of just ~1100 dermatopathologists. The mismatch between the demand for dermatopathologists and their supply necessitates tools to increase efficiency.
Artificial intelligence (AI)-based digital pathology (DP) tools may address this challenge. Here, we describe the proof-of-concept (PoC) development of a suite of DP model tools for pre-review of skin lesions, providing automated slide orientation, case prioritization, lesion identification, and margin assessment.
